Explicación teórica y compromisos ontológicos : un modelo estructuralista

En este ensayo me propongo esbozar un modelo de «explicación teórica con compromisos ontológicos». No se pretende que tal modelo tenga aplicación al uso de 'explicación' en la vida cotidiana, y ni siquiera que sea aplicable a todos los contextos científicos, tan sólo que tiene una significación genuina en grandes porciones de las ciencias naturales, particularmente en la física, y más generalmente en aquellas disciplinas que han sido matematizadas más o menos sistemáticamente. Mi tesis general, que voy a tratar de articular en lo que sigue, es simplemente la siguiente: al menos en muchos contextos de la ciencia teórica, la explicación adopta la forma de la inserción de una estructura de datos en un modelo teórico, algunos de cuyos componentes, precisamente los teóricos, puede que tengan una interpretación causal.In this essay, I set out to sketch a model of «theoretical explanation with ontological commitments». I do not claim that this model is applicable to the use of 'explanation' in daily life, nor that it is applicable to all scientific context. I only claim that it has genuine meaning in large portions of the natural sciences, particularly in physics, and more generally in those disciplines that have been more or less systematically mathematised. My overall thesis, which I shall try to articulate here, is simply the following: at least in many contexts in the theoretical sciences, explanation takes on the guise of inserting a structure of data into a theoretical model, some of whose components, precisely the theoretical ones, might have a causal interpretation

Bibliography of Structuralism III

In two occasions a Bibliography of Structuralism has been published in Erkenntnis (1989, 1994). Since then a lot of water has flowed under the bridge and the structuralist program has shown a continuous development. The aim of the present bibliography is to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the publication of An Architectonic for Science –structuralism’s main reference work– and of its recent translation into Spanish by updating the previous bibliographies with titles which have appeared since 1994 as well as before that year but which are not included in them. As in the former deliveries, this bibliography only covers books and articles that are concerned directly with the structuralist approach in the philosophy of science. We would like to thank the many colleagues who have helped us in collecting all the information.
